Weir positioned to respond to Botswana mining ecosystem

As Botswana’s mining sector continues to diversify, there are significant opportunities to support more efficient, resilient and sustainable mining opera-tions, reports manufacturer of mining equipment Weir country manager Botswana Tefo Bome.

Botswana’s mining sector, a cornerstone of the country’s economy, has long been anchored by established diamond mining operations; however, increasingly, there has been a clear shift toward investments in base and critical minerals, such as copper, nickel and coal related projects, as well as an increasing interest in the battery and energy transition.

This diversification introduces new technical processing challenges, including harder and more abrasive ores, besides others.

Weir is well positioned to help mining companies through this transition of evolving mining ecosystem, he says.

As mines require higher throughput, and greater pressure is being placed on water and energy resources in remote areas, there is increasing focus on technologies and equipment that are capable of handling highly resistant mined material, while enhancing throughput, improving energy efficiency and extending equipment life in demanding processing environments.

“As Weir, we support this transition by working closely with mining operators from an early stage of the project development through to full production,” says Bome, pointing out that, over several decades, the company has supported mining operations in Botswana with robust pumping and advanced solutions, complemented by maintenance and inspection services.

This includes delivering energy and water efficient solutions from the outset, as well as supporting existing operations as they adapt to the changing market conditions and the increasingly complex ore bodies.

“Our role is to help design a transformational flowsheet that is more suited to these complex ores, enabling sustained performance and minimising unplanned downtime, while remaining reliable in remote and water-constrained operating environments.”

Weir provides mining operations in Botswana with advanced comminution, screening and slurry handling solutions engineered for reliability and performance.

“Comminution, screening and slurry handling forms the backbone of each processing plant, and even small inefficiencies in this area can lead to lost time production and escalating maintenance costs.

“We focus on optimising processes as part of an integrated flowsheet, rather than treating each equipment separately or in isolation,” he says.

Efficiency & Asset Life

Energy efficiency and asset life are closely linked, and Weir’s approach is to match equipment precisely to the duty required, while reducing energy consumption and increasing throughput. This promotes more cost effective operations.

“For Botswana mines, where power costs and availability are increasingly in consideration, these incremental efficiency gains add up, resulting in low energy intensity and longer maintenance intervals, as well as improved plant availability. This directly supports profitability and operational stability.”

There is also strong potential to expand the use of digital tools for condition monitoring technologies, which, in turn, improves equipment reliability and reduces the dependency on a workforce that has traditionally been under supplied with skilled operators.

Beyond technology and equipment, Weir sees a clear opportunity to contribute to skills development and localisation by strengthening technical capabilities through training and knowledge transfer.

Many operations in Botswana are located far from major industrial hubs, which makes rapid technical support and reliable access to spares critical.

Weir addresses any challenges through a strong local and regional support model.
